Let’s talk adult friendships.
Because whew—nobody warned us how hard it would be to keep them, let alone make new ones. Maturing has taught me that friendships in adulthood are no longer built on proximity or childhood memories. They’re rooted in intention. And that kind of friendship? It costs time, energy, presence, and emotional availability.
Adult friendship is effort. It’s showing up when you say you will. It’s remembering birthdays and inside jokes. It’s holding space for tears and celebrating wins, even if they’re not your own. It’s listening, calling back, sending the “you got this” text. It’s being the kind of friend you prayed for.
But I won’t lie—life be lifing. I’m almost 30, with kiddos, a cat, a fish and a whole husband. Between freelancing, motherhood, and just trying to keep myself afloat, friendship often feels like one more thing I can’t juggle well. And it’s not because I don’t care. It’s because sometimes I’m so stretched that I don’t even have the energy to be social, let alone initiate plans.
Yet still… I wish someone would say:
“Girl, let’s do brunch.”
“Let’s get the kids together for a picnic.”
“I saw this and thought of you.”
Because as much as I try not to be clingy or pushy, I’m human. I want connection too. I want consistency. I want soul-deep friendship that doesn’t feel like a task, but a soft place to land.
And tell me why every woman I connect with lately is at least 5–10 years older than me? 😂 I love the wisdom and calm energy they bring—but I do wonder… can we really relate? Can we meet in the middle of where we are in life, or am I always going to feel a step behind or a little out of place?
I’m still learning what adult friendship really looks like. But I know this:
It’s showing up.
It’s doing the small things that say, I see you.
It’s choosing to love and be loved in ways that are safe, mutual, and intentional.
So tell me—how are you building and maintaining friendships while life keeps getting louder?
Drop a comment below and let’s talk about it.
Because this space? It’s one where we can take our shoes off and be real.
Woman to woman. 💛
